This study explores the relationship between the public and the private in family interaction. Building upon interdisciplinary work on dialogic repetition and intertextuality, the relationship between the public and the private, and family discourse, I examine how family members incorporate specific instances of public discourse, such as television texts and expert advice on parenting, into their private interaction. Data drawn from a larger research project where adult members of four dual-income families with at least one child audiotaped their interactions at home and at work for at least one week made possible the investigation of these public/private intertextual relationships across time and in different social contexts.

I propose three types of intertextual relations between the public and the private in family discourse: immediate intertextuality, displaced intertextuality and intertextuality in action. Specifically, I argue that intertextual repetition of remembered bits of public texts in private settings can occur within a few moments (immediate intertextuality ) or within a few days (displaced intertextuality) from the time of "the original." Intertextuality in action refers to instances when public texts become "one's own" actions as, when expert advice on parenting is "repeated" in parents' everyday actions. The proposed classification further develops Bakhtin's (1981, 1984) dialogic principle by providing a detailed account of the relationships between "the original" public text and its recycling in another domain.

This study both draws on Bakhtin's work and contributes to our understanding of his ideas. My discussion of how family and friends engage in gossip-like talk about a particular television program stems from Bakhtin's term " zhytejskaya germenevtika," previously translated as "living hermeneutics" (1981: 338). I suggest that this term should be more accurately translated as "quotidian hermeneutics" to reflect Bakhtin's argument that meaning-making is an active interpretive process in everyday interaction.

The analysis of the intertextual repetition of fragments of public texts in private settings demonstrates that the public and the private are dialogically interrelated, and that public texts serve as resources used by family and friends to talk about their feelings, educate their children, identify shared values, affirm their friendships and discuss and engage in parenting.
