Thesis (Ph.D.)--University of Virginia, 2005.
This dissertation focused on defining and improving community-based, women's health education in America. A conceptual model was built to communicate an understanding of women's health education and to inform the design of educational programs and activities. This conceptual model was created using a metamodel and was grounded in and informed by data from two different sources. The first source was philosophical data gathered from an extensive literature review of the following terms: community, women, health, education, women's health, health education, and women's education. Empirical findings, gathered from four women's health focus groups conducted across the state of Virginia, formed the second source. This conceptual model was designed to (1) increase efficacy in conceptualizing and facilitating women's health education, and (2) empower individuals and groups of individuals to address personal and community health issues. A case study of the model's applicability using obesity-awareness education in the Westhaven community in Charlottesville, Virginia was also presented.
