The present longitudinal investigation sought to examine the effects of different features of maternal depression (onset and chronicity), as well as concomitant parenting behaviors and contextual risk and protective factors, on children's emotion regulation patterns (EMRPs) and socioemotional functioning. In addition, the mechanisms that link and alter (i.e., mediating and moderating processes) the relation between maternal depression and children's emotion regulation and socioemotional difficulties were investigated. 151 mothers and their children were assessed when children were approximately 1½-, 3-, 4-, and 5-years of age. Ninety-three of the children had mothers with a history of Major Depressive Disorder (MDD) that had occurred since the child's birth, and 58 of the children had mothers without a past or current history of MDD or any other Axis 1 mental disorder. Early-onset maternal depression (i.e., depression that occurred during the first 18 months of the child's life) predicted children's EMRPs at age 4 years, with approximately 73% of the depressed offspring exhibiting dysregulated emotion patterns (i.e., undercontrolled and overcontrolled types) compared with only 43% of the nondepressed controls. A history of early-onset maternal depression also was found to predict increased contextual risk and decreased contextual protective factors in the caregiving milieu at age 3 years. In predicting children's 5-year-old socioemotional functioning, early-onset maternal depression, negative maternal sensitivity at age 3, contextual risk and protective factors at age 3, and dysregulated emotion patterns at age 4 all contributed significantly to prediction. Additionally, dysregulated emotion patterns and contextual protective factors were found to mediate the relation between children's early exposure to maternal depression and their socioemotional outcomes at age 5. Lastly, results revealed that the relationship between early-onset maternal depression and children's later dysregulated emotion patterns and decreased social acceptance were more pronounced in the context of a history of high versus low negative maternal sensitivity exposure. Overall, study findings increase understanding of the mechanisms through which maternal depression confers risk on offspring, and provide insight into emotion regulation deficits, contextual factors, and parenting behaviors that may impede the development of psychological well-being of children reared by a depressed caregiver.
