Classical musicians face pressure on and off stage. Many experience psychological and physiological symptoms indicative of stress and autonomic arousal. This project was an exploratory study examining dimensions of personality and stress in 34 classical music students from Juilliard in New York City. Participants were assessed on absorption, dissociation, state and trait anxiety, attentional processes, and questions specifically relevant to musicians. Memory slips, making mistakes, cold and sweaty hands, racing heartbeats and shaking fingers were the most highly reported concerns. Competitions and auditions were the most stressful situations. The mean scores for absorption, state and trait anxiety in musicians in this study were similar to those in non-musician college students in other studies. Musicians scored higher than in other reported findings in college students for dissociation and extremely focused attention abilities. Overall, this study confirms the idea that stress in classical musicians is an issue that needs to be addressed in research and clinical applications.
