Mechanisms that might contribute to the promotion and maintenance of worry were studied. Study 1 examined the relationship between worry and physiological reactivity to fear in 36 students finding that reactivity was blunted following worry when fear was self-generated, but arousal occurred when fear following worry was controlled. Study 2 examined both subjective and objective preferences for fear preceded by worry or relaxation in 34 students finding both subjective ratings and eye blink startle response were elevated during fear preceded by worry suggesting that fear following worry is experienced as aversive. Study 3 examined the existence of anxious worry and problem-solving worry and their relationships to distress and reasons for worry in 204 students. Results suggested distinct types of worry that could not be distinguished by reasons for worrying although each type of worry had an opposite relationship with distress. The theory of a positive tactic of worry to plan for and avoid stressful situations was supported.
