Thesis (Ph.D.)--Rutgers The State University of New Jersey - New Brunswick, 2005.
Based on social learning theory, this thesis proposes a generalized model to explain how the extent of participation in international developmental activities (IDAs) influences two dimensions of international executives' success in their global work activities (global work effectiveness and supervisory rated work performance). The findings, based on secondary data analysis of data from 256 international executives of one large multinational conglomerate headquartered in the United Kingdom, suggest that the extent of participation in IDAs is positively related to global work effectiveness. Furthermore, the personality traits of openness to experience and extroversion moderate this relationship. Specifically, the relationship between the extent of participation in IDAs and global work effectiveness is stronger for international executives high on openness to experience or extroversion. Possible explanations for these findings are offered, and theoretical and practical implications of findings are discussed.
