This study examines the development of the dance program at Morgan State University from 1953--2004, through the use of primary and secondary sources. Using a biographical and oral recollections approach to analyze institutional History, this work illustrates how the dance program evolved from courses that reviewed Black Dance to an accredited classroom concentration. This work is based primarily on personal interviews, as written documentation on this subject is lacking.

520 $a During its early years, through the 1950s, Morgan's dance program faced several challenges. Funding and space were limited, and students attended classes and rehearsals in the concrete basement of the Morgan Christian Center.
520 $a Throughout her tenure at Morgan Physical Education instructor, Dorothy P. Stanley, attempted to elevate the dance program to a level of a concentration. Although unsuccessful, her efforts helped pave the way for the program eventually achieving that status. In 1974 Iantha Tucker became the Director of Morgan's Dance Education Program. Under her leadership the program flourished and became increasingly accepted as a viable part of the Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance Department. Largely due to Tucker's efforts the program eventually became a minor concentration for physical education majors.
