Thesis (M.Ed.)--Stephen F. Austin State University, 2005.
With the implementation of Title IX, opportunity for female collegiate athletes has increased considerably over the past several decades. Because the physical self is a focus in athletics, it is probable that this environment influences one's satisfaction with her body. It is unclear whether the level at which an athlete competes affects her satisfaction with her body. This study compared body image satisfaction, assessed through use of a modified version of the BIS Questionnaire, among collegiate female soccer players competing at different levels: NCAA Division I programs, NCAA Division I AA programs and NCAA Division II. Analyses revealed no significant difference ( F = 1.36, df = 2/105, p < .05) when comparing BIS by divisions. When comparing BIS scores to year in school and ethnicity, results indicated no significant differences between the groups on 'year in school' (F = .540, df = 3/104, p < .05) and Ethnicity ( F = .656, df = 4/103, p < .05). Given the results, it is plausible that the female athletes are of the same sport origin and therefore have similar exercise demands and expectations of their body; the difference in exercise levels is not extreme enough to warrant a significant difference in scores.
