Runners are often viewed as being in great health or obsessed with or addicted to running which suggests that they may have avoidant characteristics, particularly in their relationships with others. Research in areas of attachment, intimacy, coping and other psychological functioning indicates that there may be a relationship between avoidance, particularly of intimacy in relationships with others, and aspects of running.

The questionnaires included assessments of personality, attachment, level of commitment to running, coping style and TAT stories to be scored for motivation in areas of intimacy, affiliation, oneness and power.

Results partially supported the hypotheses. Runners who used avoidant and social diversion coping styles were not necessarily more avoidantly attached. More securely attached runners were reported by their partners as being able to have more trust and openness in relationships with others. More avoidantly attached runners were reported by partners as having more difficulty with trust and openness in relationships with others and these runners reported usually running alone. The more insecurely attached the runners were, the less they reported being in intimate relationships, the more they used emotional coping styles under stress, the more they reported hating running, and the less they used social diversion as a coping style. They were also less extraverted, and reported fewer intimate relationships with others. Conscientious runners were more securely attached, felt they had reached their running goals and had less anxious attachment styles. Runners who were reported by their partners as having greater difficulty with trust and openness in relationships with others were those who ran more miles per week and who self-reported avoiding conflict as much as possible in relationships with others. Runners who ran more frequently also self-reported avoiding conflict in relationships.
