Thesis (Psy.D.)--University of Hartford, 2005.
This dissertation explores the notion that the four elements of the Hip-Hop culture (dj'ing, mc'ing, break-dancing, and graffiti art) can be utilized as a form of self-expression when working with urban adolescents. That is, these four elements can be incorporated as a culturally sensitive form of music, art, and dance therapy when working with these adolescents. Issues faced by most adolescents, as well as issues unique to urban adolescents, are reviewed in the introductory chapter. In addition, a review of the historical precis of the formation of Hip-Hop culture, the development of music, art, and dance therapies, and contemporary advancements in the field of music, art and dance therapies is to follow. The latter section focuses on research involving music, art, and dance in working specifically with adolescents. Twenty sample group modules have been included and can be utilized when facilitating groups with urban adolescents. Such modules are tailored to include the four elements of the Hip-Hop culture and topics dealing with a myriad of issues affecting these adolescents.
