Analysis of the Chinese language typically involves resolving different kinds of ambiguity: constituent ambiguity, part-of-speech ambiguity, lexical ambiguity, and relational ambiguity. Among them, constituent ambiguity and part-of-speech ambiguity are most extensively covered in this study. The tasks involving part-of-speech disambiguation and case role assignment are critical in that they help specify the constituents and relations of an utterance, which are the main components of meaning representation. Meaning representation is addressed in this study as a bridge between the source language and the target language in an interlingual machine translation system. To serve as the bridge, the representation must be abstract and language independent.

520 $a Chinese is nearly uninflected and Chinese written characters reflect syllables rather than words of an utterance. Without derivational inflections, parts of speech in Chinese are confusing in that several parts of speech share single citation forms. Because clause or phrase boundary markers similar to English complementizers are often absent, or not required, Chinese speakers rely heavily on case role assignment to discern these boundaries.
520 $a To make sure that the interlingua derived from our analysis can mediate between very different languages, the problems involving mismatch, which results from formal divergences between languages, are also addressed.
