Thesis (Ph.D.)--Illinois State University, 2003.
This dissertation suggests that the acquisition of a privileged subject position in the American Symbolic Order depends largely upon the body that one animates. Those who animate what I have termed invisible bodies, fully functional male bodies covered by white skin, move freely throughout childhood using it as a rite of passage on their journey towards becoming subjects with privileged positionality. Those who animate marked bodies, marked insofar as their relation to the fully functional, white, male body will find that adulthood affords them no privileged positionality. Thus, what follows is a study that suggests ways in which we might shift the ideological perceptions of the marked body.
