Warren Benson, born in Detroit in 1924, has written nearly 150 works for bands, orchestras, choruses, instrumental chamber ensembles, instrumental and vocal soloists, and song cycles for solo voice accompanied by instrumental ensembles. He is best known for his wind ensemble music and song cycles, many of which have been recorded. He has also been a notable teacher of percussion, composition, and theory at Ithaca College and the Eastman School of Music. During the 1960s he designed and implemented two pilot programs for the Contemporary Music Project. As a conductor, clinician, and lecturer he has influenced improvement in the quality of repertoire played by bands and raised performance standards. He has also been instrumental in developing a solo and chamber repertoire for the saxophone. Benson's music is played around the world.

520 $a Benson's compositional style is "inclusive," incorporating tonality, free atonality, serialism, canons, ostinati, layering techniques, and other compositional techniques into a unique language embodying lyricism. Benson's scoring reflects his interest in the importance of timbre. His thin, soloistic textures create a vulnerability, a high level of exposure, to every musician. His practice of timbral modulation transforms tonal colors within sustained lines. He has also taken a "prescriptive" approach to composing, writing works that fill a void in the repertoire for some mediums. His slow, soft, thinly scored works for winds and percussion are prime examples. He has also championed the use of soprano saxophone, English horn, bass saxophone, contrabass clarinets, percussion, and piano in his band works.
