Thesis (Ph.D.)--Virginia Commonwealth University, 1994.
The purpose of this study was to explore the differences between grandparents who have different levels of caregiving responsibility for their grandchildren. Research on grandparents has shown that grandparents prefer to have moderate levels of contact with their grandchildren rather than to have full responsibility (Troll, 1983; Cherlin & Furstenberg, 1986). In some situations, however, it becomes necessary for the grandparent to take over the care of the grandchild. When this occurs, it was expected that full-time caregivers would experience more stress and burden as seen in caregivers of older adults (Lawton, Moss, Kleban, Glicksman, & Rovine, 1991; Pearlin, Mullan, Semple, & Skaff, 1990; Zarit, 1989).Subjects--Topical Terms:

One hundred and one grandmothers' situations were assessed. Twenty-three grandmothers were providing full-time care for their grandchildren, 33 grandmothers were providing part-time care, and 45 grandmothers visited their grandchildren on a regular basis. Assessments were made of grandchild behavior problems, grandmothers' burden and parenting stress, grandmothers' social support levels, grandparenting satisfaction, and life satisfaction. Other information included grandmother demographics and why grandmother was providing care.

Results showed that full-time caregivers had higher levels of burden than part-time caregivers. Burden was best predicted by grandchild behavior problems, grandmothers' energy and vitality levels and, for full-time grandmothers, income. Full-time caregivers also experienced more parenting stress than part-time caregivers. Parenting stress was best predicted by grandchild behavior problems, grandmothers' energy and vitality and, for part-time caregivers, by levels of social support. Part-time caregiving grandmothers reported the most satisfaction with grandparenting. Full-time caregivers and non-caregivers reported lower levels of satisfaction with grandparenting. The best predictor of grandparenting satisfaction was grandchild behavior problems.

Part-time caregiving grandmothers and non-caregiving grandmothers reported higher levels of life satisfaction than did full-time caregiving grandmothers. The best predictors of life satisfaction were levels of social support, education level and, for part-time caregivers and non-caregivers, health status.

It was suggested that more information on the relationship between the grandparent and their adult child (the parent of the grandchild) is needed to fully assess the impact on grandparents of providing care for their grandchild.
