Thesis (M.A.)--University of Southern California, 2003.
This is the story of an American woman working tirelessly to transform a West African village in dire need of health care and infrastructural improvements. Elise DeVore first witnessed the devastation in Nana Kenieba in March of 2000, as a fourth year medical student from the University of Iowa. She went to Mali, the third poorest country in the world with the third highest infant mortality rate. This area is almost forgotten by the international community, the media and even its own government. Elise was moved by what she experienced, and now, along with her father also a doctor, Dr. Steven DeVore, they have formed a small relief squad. They have returned to bring medicine, health care, school supplies, and clean drinking water to help this village sustain itself. This story chronicles the day-to-day living conditions, continued needs, and the impact this family's devotion has had on the village.
