Design. New Zealand White male rabbits were divided into four groups: (1) ACLT surgery; (2) ACLT surgery with subcutaneous ZA injections; (3) sham surgery with subcutaneous ZA injections; (4) sham surgery. Animals were sacrificed after 12-weeks.

Results. Tibial plateaus were the only articular surface displaying gross degeneration (2 of 25 animals) after ACLT surgery. Macroscopically, no significant differences were determined between the four groups. However, microscopic degeneration was observed in tissue of ACLT animals previously determined as macroscopically normal. A possible trend was determined between the four groups.

Conclusion. ZA demonstrated a potential trend toward a chondroprotective effect in a rabbit ACLT model of OA.
