This study adds to the body of information about social capital and tests the claims of James Coleman and the underlying principles of the "Catholic school effect." Using a sample of 172 high school seniors, 86 parochial background and 86 public feeder background students, quantitative data were analyzed to determine if students in a public high school with a parochial junior high school background achieve at higher levels than students with a public junior high school background. Specifically, data concerning students' grade point average and credits earned were gathered and analyzed. Additionally, the number of AP/Honors classes taken and their grade point average earned in the University of California-required classes measured the students' college ambitions. Lastly, standardized testing data was considered as another indicator of academic achievement. The study continued with direct measurement of social capital stocks and flows.

520 $a Information was gathered in this study to directly measure the students' social capital stocks and flows. A resource generator survey was administered to the students in the study group to measure the students' social capital stocks. Students were also interviewed to measure the students' social capital flows. The interview questions were specifically designed to draw out the students' understanding of the impact of social capital in their academic lives. The qualitative interview data was then analyzed to identify patterns in the responses.
520 $a The study supported some portions of Coleman's theory but not others. Coleman's claims about the development of social capital flows were validated by this study. Students with a parochial school background demonstrated superior social capital flows to students with a public school background. The parochial school students had fully developed closed network social capital that allowed them to practice utilizing structural holes in their networks to identify new opportunities. Claims about superior academic performance were not reinforced. With the exception of science test scores in one subgroup, none of the other academic indicators showed any difference in the academic achievement between the two groups.
