This study used qualitative and quantitative content analysis to discover whether Enneagram personality types were reflected in dream content. Participants were 24 women ranging in age from 30 to 67 years who provided dream journals of 10 dreams each for a total of 240 dreams. There were 8 participants each for Enneagram points Two, Five, and Eight. Enneagram type was determined by previous self-typing and verified by the Wagner Enneagram Personality Style Scales. Dream content was coded blind to Enneagram type. Type was revealed and codes were formed into categories. For each category, frequencies of codes were totaled by type, and total code frequencies were compared between the types using Chi-square analysis. Twos' dream code frequencies were significantly high in the Categories of Emotions, Sadness, Familiar Characters, Image, and Relational. Fives' dreams were high in Law and Order, Mental Focus, Mental Lack, On Course, Positive Focus, and Impersonal Communication. Fives' dreams were low in Emotions, Anger, Sadness, Image, Water, and Public Locations. Eights' dreams were high in Negative Reactions, Space, Expanded Space, Public Locations, Sight, Smell, and Neutral Water. Eights' dreams were low in Characters, Familiar Characters, Mental Focus, On Course, and Relational. There was also evidence for the 3 centers of intelligence. Twos' dreams suggest the Emotional center with high scores in Emotions, Sadness, Familiar Characters, and Relational. Fives' dreams suggest the Mental center with high scores in Mental Focus, Mental Lack, and Impersonal Communication. Eights' dreams suggest the Instinctual center with high scores in Space, Public Locations, Expanded Space, Sight, and Smell. In addition to the quantitative findings, there was qualitative evidence of the Holy Ideas, and qualitative differences in language and intensity of symbolic content. These results contribute to the study of the Enneagram, and the field of personality and dream research.
