Thesis (Ph.D.)--Syracuse University, 2001.
This dissertation presents an analysis of the morphonological formations eliminated from the Polish language system in the middle of the XX century due to the normative attempts imposed on the Polish language by the principles of "language politics." The research was based on the data found in Slonski's Slownik polskich bledow jezykowych (A Dictionary of Polish Linguistic errors ) issued in 1947. Linguistic "errors" from Slonski were compared with the relevant data contained in Markowski's Nowy slownik poprawnej polszczyzny (A new Dictionary of Correct Polish) published in 1999, Doroszewski's Slownik poprawnej polszczyzny (A Dictionary of Correct Polish) issued in 1998, and Karlowicz's Slownik jezyka polskiego (A Dictionary of the Polish Language), published between 1900--1927. The answers to the following questions formed the main goals of this dissertation: (1) Are the lexemes considered erroneous in 1947 (Slonski) also considered erroneous at the beginning of the XX century (Karlowica); (2) Are the lexemes considered erroneous in 1947 (Slonski) posing the same normative problems at the end of the XX century (Markowski, Doroszewski); (3) Were there differences of opinion between Doroszewski (1998) and Markowski (1999) when evaluating the correctness/incorrectness of the lexemes in question?

The first chapter presents the thesis and origin of "language politics" and explains the notion of linguistic error, linguistic variants, language system and a literary norm.

Having made the presumption that linguistic formations eliminated from the Polish language by Slonski constituted variants of the language system the second chapter introduces variants formed as a result of historical language development, variants resulting from the accommodation of the Polish language system to the individual utterance, and variants resulting from the accommodation of linguistic borrowings to the Polish language system.

The third chapter presents a detailed analysis of the data collected from Slonski's dictionary and reveals inconsistency and contradictions of normative recommendations.

The final chapter contains the conclusion implying that the linguistic normalization advocated by the principles of "language politics" was inappropriate, i.e., artificially determined and applied, and ultimately failed to fulfill its objectives.
