Thesis (M.A.)--California State University, Long Beach, 2004.
Since the founding of Harvard University in 1636, the corporation and Board of Overseers have selected 27 men to serve as its president. They deliberately chose each successive chief executive both for his political acumen and his ability to remedy the faults of his predecessor or to provide a new direction for the University. In the course of history, Harvard's presidents have used their political power to enable the institution to grow from a small college with a classical curriculum to a prestigious, great university with undergraduate and graduate programs that have provided educational leadership for the nation and the world.

The purpose of this study (Gerry Riposa, Ph.D. [Chairman]) was to trace the history of presidential politics at Harvard to determine the influence of its chief executives on American higher education and the federal government. The research substantiated the thesis that Harvard's presidents have not only determined politically the structure and processes of almost every aspect of higher education, but they have consistently had a significant influence on American presidential decisions, and they have continuously influenced the course of American national [federal] politics since the founding of the United States in 1789.
