Wood biscuits are used to join particleboard and MDF panels together as might be used in case type of furniture. The study was carried out to evaluate on the strength of furniture corner joints constructed with wood biscuits.

Corner joint strength is developed mainly from the edge gluing of face and butt member and not from the glued biscuits. The biscuits serve to accurately align the face and butt members during the assembly and clamping period.

Results also indicated that particleboard glued and unglued edge corner joints were stronger than similar joints constructed with MDF. Tensile strength was average 7.4 percent greater in glued edge case and 55.8 percent greater in unglued edge case. Compressive strength was 29.9 percent greater in glued edge case and 125.3 percent greater in unglued edge case.

The stiffness of edge glued corner joints in compression bending was constant for all specimens when expressed as stiffness per inch of corner joint length. Glued edge MDF corner joints were average 11 percent stiffer than the similar joints constructed with particleboard.

Spacing between biscuits of 4", 5" and 6" on-center in multiple-biscuit corner joints contributed only small differences in total strength in both tension and compression tests. Results of unglued edge joints in tension tests and glued edge joints both in tension and compression tests showed that they had greater strength when the distance was 2 inches between the biscuit hole to the corresponding outside edge of the specimen than when it was at 2.5 or 3 inches with 5 inches on center biscuit spacing.
