Thesis (Ph.D.)--The Claremont Graduate University, 2003.
This dissertation explores the political economy of higher education from a historical perspective. As such, it seeks to provide a context for the growing corporatization of American higher education. At a time when there is a significant lack of work in higher education grounded in a critique and challenge to the logic of capitalism, this inquiry is informed by Marx's method of dialectics. Based on this analysis, I argue that since the industrial revolution, philanthropic and corporate interests, with the assistance of the federal government, have consistently shaped higher education in the interest of social, political and economic market driven imperatives. Following the examination of the political economy, I engage the question of what this historical moment requires of those within the academic community committed to the struggle for human emancipation. I contend that if we are to effectively challenge the dehumanizing elements that are increasingly vying for control of the academy, and indeed all aspects of life, we must not only understand and expose how capitalist relations inform these developments, but also be willing to struggle collectively to change these conditions.Subjects--Topical Terms:
