Thesis (Ph.D.)--Graduate Theological Union, 2000.
This dissertation focuses on the work of three scholars who have intentionally engaged Sigmund Freud and his theory of religious faith as psychological projection: The neo-Freudian object relations psychologist, Ana-Maria Rizzuto, the philosopher, Paul Ricoeur, and the feminist theorist, Judith Van Herik. Each of these theorists argues convincingly that religious believers cannot ignore Freud's work on religion, even if Freud does arrive at a different conclusion about ultimate reality. Whether or not believers agree with Freud's conclusion about religion, we are, according to each of these scholars, obligated to converse with Freud about his theory of the origins of religious faith. By critically examining the work and methodologies of Rizzuto, Ricoeur and Van Herik, this dissertation demonstrates that the Freudian theory of religion as projection can be used by the religious believer to establish a way to creatively, productively and integratively live within the intrapsychic tension that develops whenever one's belief system is challenged and/or disrupted.
