The propose of this research is to present a new integrated methodology that may be used to evaluate the ergonomic risk of stressful tasks such as those found in the maintenance of the Space Transportation System (STS) of the space shuttle. An integrated methodology that combines worker input as well as accepted ergonomic task evaluation via checklist methods is need to provide a holistic approach.

The methodology presented in this work combines the Standardized Nordic Questionnaire method to gather worker input as a means of establishing the priority of the task assessed in combination with an expanded version of the OVAKO Working Posture Analysis System (OWAS) named the Expanded OVAKO Working Posture Analysis System (EOWAS). This expanded version included prone posturing in the system.

Testing of the methodology was performed by comparing the second half of the methodology (EOWAS) against an established checklist tool, the Rapid Entire Body Assessment (REBA) using a group of task evaluation experts viewing one section of the Orbiter Window Inspection job of STS maintenance. Although it is shown that there was better statistical agreement with the REBA checklist, the final analysis ratings of the EOWAS tended to agree better with the findings given by the Standardized Nordic Questionnaire. Also, the task analysis experts highly recommended the EOWAS over the REBA for ease of use, use in videotape analysis, and overall use.
