The study of leadership has been an ongoing research topic for many years. Specifically within the arena of higher education, leadership has created an ongoing dialog. The future of higher education will be dependent upon competent leaders as institutions are faced with future challenges such as shrinking budgets and growing competition for students. It is this new climate of higher education which has given rise to the field of enrollment management. Leaders of enrollment management efforts throughout the United States will need a strong leadership foundation in order to lead institutions into the future. This study researched the leadership skills needed by chief enrollment management officers at small, private, religiously affiliated institutions of higher education. The research determined that there is a set of core leadership competencies that current and future enrollment managers will need and also established that there are competencies that can be taught or learned. This research provides a foundation for understanding needed leadership traits for enrollment management within a specific type of institution and provides further reflection on opportunities for training and educational programs for enrollment management professionals.
