A questionnaire was administered in order to assess the musical habits of middle-class Montesclareans. Montes Claros is a mid-size city located in the sertao region in the northern part of Minas Gerais state. The city is a crossroads of migration for peoples and musics from the northern to the southern parts of Brazil and vice-versa. Montesclarean taste in popular music is as varied as its stratified society.

Chapter I is an introduction to Montesclarean history which was centered in the rivalry of two political and cultural groups (the "aristocrat" and conservative de baixo and the "plebeian" liberal de cima). Chapter II recreates from interviews an oral history of Montesclarean social life from the 1920s up to early 1960s. Influential historical landmarks were the 1930 liberal revolution and the 1964 military takeover. Chapter III is a survey of the uses and functions of musica popular for Montesclareans in the 1980s. Chapter IV elaborates on selected musical examples of musica romantica, musica sertaneja, rock brasileiro, and MPB (musica popular brasileira).

Montesclarean music aesthetics is influenced by social class (estimated through educational and professional levels more than by economics), gender, and age. The genres musica romantica and musica sertaneja romantica convey personal feelings while MPB represents cultural identity. Differences in the prestige of certain genres is exemplified in the aesthetic value attached to MPB. Rock brasileiro mirrors the urban generational values of Montesclarean youth.

Montesclarean musical taste expresses the changing role of music in a changing social context. As its varied population experienced a shift from a rural and traditional context to an industrialized and modern context, the locale for musical practices and social interaction changed from serenades and saraus, to footing and balls, to bars and pizzerias. Music preferences changed from modinhas and waltzes, to boleros and samba-cancao, to musica sertaneja and rock brasileiro.
