40 kg) with little or no marbling. Economic analyses of production systems with the two breed types indicated that the large frame breeds obtained higher prices at auction markets and slaughter plants. Since the large framed cattle were significantly larger than the medium frame breed types, and cattle pricing was based on weight of the animal, gross revenues were significantly higher for the larger cattle. Despite associated higher production costs, large framed cattle had significantly higher gross margins than the medium framed. Further division of markets was examined by considering two market regions for carcass pricing, four marbling levels, and a size restriction for longissimus dorsi muscle area for a total of 24 niche markets. Breeding objectives were defined for each niche market. A twenty-fifth breeding objective depicting production efficiency as defined by the economic efficiency point was used as a comparison for the niche market objectives. Correlations among breeding objectives ranged from 0.89 to 0.99. Since all correlations were less than 1, it was concluded that differences among breeding objectives existed. Breeding for production efficiency in a large frame herd was shown to match all niche market specifications, however breeding for niche markets would be required for medium frame breeders to meet the requirements of the two potential markets. The Canadian beef industry recognizes two breed types: large frame cattle, which include Charolais and Simmental, and medium frame which include Hereford and Angus. Despite the diversity of breeding stock, current market signals indicate that only one market for the beef product exists: a market for large and lean carcasses. Surveys of the packing, processing, and retail sectors of the beef industry in this research, showed that two major potential markets exist. One market requires a 300-340 kg carcass with a high degree of marbling and the second market a high yielding carcass (
