Sports participation is an accepted part of the youth experience in the United States. It is highly regarded as a way to teach skills and enhance feelings of self-esteem and competence. A positive impact on self-esteem and competence is particularly important in the early years of adolescence, when research has demonstrated a drop in self-esteem in females. The Coopersmith Self-Esteem Inventory and the Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale were used to determine if self-esteem in sixth through eighth grade girls changed during the course of participation in a school-sponsored sport, as compared to girls who did not participate in a sport. There was no significant difference in self-esteem from the pre-test to the post-test for either group. There was a significant difference found in the initial self-esteem of the groups, with the sports participation group having a significantly higher self-esteem on the pre-test than the non-participation group.
