Understanding the scattering behavior of terahertz waves from rough surfaces is important to the development of terahertz imaging systems. The relationship between surface roughness and the reflectance of a rough surface in the specular direction is given by theoretical models based on the Kirchhoff diffraction approximation. By comparing measured reflectance spectra to theory, the roughness parameters of a surface can be accurately determined. In this study, the surface roughness present on metals and dielectrics was evaluated using Fourier Transform Infrared spectroscopy and a 1.56 THz laser scatterometer. In addition, the effect of periodic roughness and surface defects on the THz scattering behavior of cylindrical objects was also investigated.
