Thesis (Ph.D.)--Indiana University, 2010.
This study emerged from questioning whether a limited portrayal and understanding of art education's past has contributed to marginalizing the arts and artful modes of learning in our public schools and universities. Ensuring the academic integrity of art education is of increasing importance and art education remains on the fringes of our public school core curriculum and our teacher-preparation programs. The underlying premise of this historical study is that prior to the rationalization of our educational system, the arts and art education played a more comprehensive role in learning and knowing. Accordingly, this study historically investigates artful modes of inquiry through a casestudy analysis of the illustrated scientific travel journal Reise in das innere Nord-America in den jahren 1832 bis 1834. The Reise was the result of a scientific expedition to North America conducted by Prince Maximilian of Wied between 1832 and 1834. It was selected for study, in part, because the methods of inquiry employed reflected an interdisciplinary approach to epistemology that encouraged exploring the natural world subjectively as well as objectively. Data for this historical case-study was collected from four key archives: the Joslyn Art Museum, the Newberry Library, the Workingman's Institute, and Historical New Harmony, Indiana. Analysis of this artifact reveals that the arts were instrumental to the contextualization, particularization, and edification of aesthetic and scientific information on the natural world. Through historical research methods, this study gives voice to artistic, interdisciplinary forms of inquiry that are rarely discussed in fields of history and education and are often neglected as forms of academically rigorous research. Lastly, the implications of the artful forms of empirical research historically analyzed in this study are discussed in relation to art education's history, art education curriculum, and arts-based research methodologies.
