Thesis (Psy.D.)--Alliant International University, San Diego, 2010.
Supervision has long been used in the field of Marriage and Family Therapy (MFT) as a means by which information and skills are passed on from a more experienced clinician to one in training This type of supervisory relationship creates an inevitable power differential. This study adds to a more thorough understanding of the effects of power in the supervisory relationship on supervisors and supervisees. The researcher conducted a review of past and current literature in this field to explore how power has been interpreted by the various dominant theories in the MFT field. Through analysis of in-depth interviews of four supervisees and four AAMFT supervisors regarding their experience of power in the supervisory relationship, a rich account is given of how power is experienced in the supervisory relationship.

The researcher identified four main themes based on the interviews with supervisors and supervisees. The main themes identified were: Recognition of power, power use, protected use of supervision time, and supervision training. Each theme indicates an area participants found important when considering power in the supervisory relationship.
