The growing market of online services presents unique challenges to those who these services. Although prior research has laid the foundation for understanding how online consumers adopt and use services on the Internet, there are still instances where online users' behaviors are hard to explain. This dissertation addresses a broad set of cases where users intended behaviors are not easily explained by traditional models of technology adoption and use.

Three important situations are examined in this dissertation. Firstly, users who are confronted by complex technical issues must use non-technical cues to make decisions about technology use. To study this issue, one study in this dissertation looks at the complicated security environment of the Internet in which users must ascertain whether websites can be trusted to handle their information appropriately. Secondly, even when users find a new online service that they trust and find valuable, users are often unable to switch from their older services due to economic constraints. A second study in this dissertation looks at the Internet Service Provider market in which users face heavy constraints that make it costly to switch. Finally, users can sometimes not only consume online services, but also contribute to other users of these services. Online communities are a common example of social online services that encourage users to contribute knowledge and spread word-of-mouth to outsiders. The third study of this dissertation examines how online communities not only satisfy users, but also engage users and promote prosocial behavior. Altogether, this dissertation seeks to expand research into some of the relatively less examined technical, economic, and social issues that influence users of online services.
