Thesis (Ph.D.)--University of Calgary (Canada), 2009.
The genesis of this dissertation arose from my years of socializing with public school educators and hearing them comment on many occasions that institutional press, systemic bureaucracy and techno-rational-instrumentalism were eroding their passion for teaching and breaking down their sense of wholeness. Having engaged in spiritual practices since being a teenager, and recognizing their influence on personal wholeness, I formed the following research question to guide this study: How are school educators' spirituality and personal wholeness evolved, expressed and interpreted during their day-to-day experiences.

The research topic required a theoretical and methodological approach that was sensitive to uncovering and understanding abstract constructs such as spirituality and personal wholeness from the perspective of the lived lives of five educators/participants. Thus, I blended together Gadamer and Ricoeur's hermeneutic ontology/epistemology, Wilber's integral theory and a life history/biography methodology into an original qualitative explanatory framework that I named--- integral hermeneutic biography. Using in-depth, face-to-face interviews I gathered the narrative accounts of the evolution and expression of the spirituality and personal wholeness of the educators/participants and then analyzed and interpreted those narratives so as to compose an interpretive biography for each participant and determine insights with respect to the research topic and questions. Generally, the findings showed a strong perception of an erosion of empathy and collapse of compassion within the public school system, resulting in a context where the spiritual natures and needs of educators are largely ignored and their sense of personal wholeness is often diminished. The five biographies document the individual approaches and processes to living in such a context. Based on the experiences of the five participants, the study concludes that spirituality and personal wholeness are not optional, but essential aspects of teachers' lives and when ignored can result in increased costs and inefficiencies for the educational system and reduced learning for its students.
