Thesis (M.S.)--California State University, Long Beach, 2010.
This study determines the general population's level of knowledge about anabolic androgenic steroids (AASs) and opinions/perceptions of AAS use, and situates perceived justification(s) for AAS use in a theoretical context. It also identifies factors that influence ones perceptions and knowledge about AASs/AAS users. Prior research focused on the reasons for and effects of AAS use, people likely to engage in AAS use, availability of AASs, and agencies responsible for policing AAS use and distribution. However, the literature failed to identify the general population's knowledge about AASs and the elements of effective AAS education. To remedy this, the current study asked participants (n = 312) questions soliciting close-ended responses measuring their level of knowledge about the physiological, psychological, and legal effects of AAS use. The findings indicate a need to educate the general population about AASs by utilizing the most effective sources of information.
