This inquiry is a narrative self-study of an academic administrator's journey to understand the importance of building community in a college setting. My journey begins in childhood, using Clandinin and Connelly's (2000) framework that coming to understand is "simultaneously focussed in four directions: inward and outward, backwards and forwards and situated within place" (p. 49).

520 $a I use quilting as a metaphor because, like building community, piecing a quilt requires the ability to take individual pieces and put them together to make something warm, comfortable, beautiful and useful. Both take time, knowledge, love and a vision of possibilities. Every quilt has a pattern. I believe that communities are the same---they need a pattern or a reason to be.
520 $a Annie Dillard (1998) says, "The secret of seeing is, then, the pearl of great price" (p. 35). This inquiry is about learning to see what is worth creating and preserving in community.
