Autism is growing at an increasing rate across the United States (Center for Disease Control, 2007). A recent study conducted by The National Children's Health Survey Report found one in 91 children had been diagnosed with autism (Autism Society, 2009). Medical research is showing increasing numbers of chromosomal abnormalities in genetic testing of patients with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) (Scheeren & Stauder, 2008; Volker & Lopata, 2008; Wassink, Losh, Piven, Sheffield, Ashley, Westin, & Patil, 2007). Szatmari, Zwaigenbaum, and Bryson (2004) and Wassink et al. (2007) construct a correlation between new diagnoses of autism and family histories. This thesis will identify the characteristics of autism in patients through shared research as well as identify autism in family histories.
