Thesis (M.A.)--Southern Connecticut State University, 2010.
The current longitudinal study explored the efficacy of an original intervention designed to increase identity exploration and commitment, as well as decrease identity distress, in college students. In addition, this study explored the relationship between identity status and several psychosocial factors, including perceived parenting style, ego strengths, and identity distress. Identity exploration was found to be correlated positively with identity distress and authoritarian parenting style, while it was correlated negatively with ego strengths and permissive parenting. Identity commitment was correlated positively with ego strengths and authoritative parenting, while it was associated negatively with identity distress. Furthermore, authoritative parenting negatively predicted posttest identity exploration, permissive parenting negatively predicted posttest identity commitment, and the ego strength of fidelity positively predicted posttest identity commitment. The intervention was not found to have an effect on identity over the course of the study.
