Thesis (M.A.)--Northern Illinois University, 2010.
The purpose of the study was to examine the relationship between third-grade students' musical aptitude and their academic achievement. Musical aptitude was measured using Edwin Gordon's Intermediate Measures of Music Audiation (IMMA). Academic achievement was measured using the Illinois Standards Achievement Test (ISAT). Correlations between tonal, rhythmic, and composite musical aptitude and reading, mathematics, and writing achievement were calculated using the Pearson product-moment correlation coefficient. A significant relationship was found between rhythmic musical aptitude and mathematics achievement ( r=.247, p<.05) and composite musical aptitude and mathematics achievement (r=.291, p<.05). Discussions include brain research related to spatial-temporal reasoning, Gordon's Music Learning Theory, implications of musical aptitude testing for educators, and the importance of music in the elementary curriculum.
