Thesis (M.S.)--California State University, Long Beach, 2011.
The purpose of this study was to examine the sources and extent of conflict experienced between mountain bikers and hikers in coastal Orange County, California. This information can be utilized to develop a framework to help classify off-road cyclists as a unique recreational user group, with specific needs. Knowing these needs may lead to changing the way land managers control certain access to trail systems, develop new rules, or educate current users on trail etiquette, proper procedure, and conflict-reducing techniques. The hope is, that by knowing more about this problem cyclists will make educated decisions in choosing the best places and times to ride, avoiding conflict, and allowing all user groups to exist harmoniously.
