Problem-based learning has been used for decades as an instructional strategy in fields such as medicine, architecture, and business and may have applications in other fields as well. The purpose of this study was to investigate the effectiveness of problem-based learning as an instructional method for the Alabama Community College Leadership Program as evidenced by participant perceptions of leadership and of the method. Specifically investigated was how participants' knowledge of, skills for, and beliefs about community college leadership changed during the problem-based leadership program.

The sample population was 26 males and females. The methodology involved a mixed model, using both quantitative and qualitative data. The quantitative research instrument was a 35-item Likert scale survey designed by the researcher. The qualitative data were gathered via interviews, written responses to questions, self-peer evaluations, and presentation evaluations.

Participants showed an increase in knowledge and skills related to community college leadership. However, their beliefs about community college leadership did not change. Among the values of the PBL experience included learning about the history of Alabama's 2-year institutions, a new understanding of higher education law, competencies for 2-year mergers, collaborative leadership, networking, and building relationships with other community college leaders.

Recommendations are for longitudinal studies of the group to determine whether participants retain what they have learned over time. Also because PBL research traditionally has focused on outcomes, additional studies should focus on the PBL process: how new learning takes place, how pre-existing knowledge is being integrated with new learning, or the role of the group in improving the learning process.
