In the wake of 'peak oil' and energy descent, communities will go through a transition towards a more local food production system. Permaculture represents an ethical design method for food production and land use. This research will develop, and then communicate through design, the creation of a permaculture land use plan for the City of Guelph, ON. Data were collected through a focused literature review, exploring the principles of permaculture, focusing on a set of five Permaculture Districts. Site analysis was conducted through GIS mapping, aerial photographs and the land use map for the City of Guelph. Through knowledge gained from the focused literature review and analysis of the land use map for the City of Guelph, a set of criteria was developed for each Permaculture District. The criteria were used to determine the suitability of each Permaculture District within the Official Plan's land use designation for the City of Guelph. The study will serve as a framework to inform the integration of permaculture land uses into a sustainable food system plan.
