Thesis (M.S.)--Southern Connecticut State University, 2010.
This thesis examines the community college first-year composition course and aims to show that peer review is an innovative and effective teaching method in the community college first-year composition classroom. Peer review particularly addresses the needs of the typically diverse and underprepared population in the community college setting. This thesis investigates methods for teaching composition at community colleges by means of peer review, a strategy that addresses the urgent need for the community colleges to retain their students and encourage transfer to four-year colleges while integrating diversity of culture into the learning process. Finally, the thesis will be argue that implementing peer review within the composition classroom increases the probability of achieving the objectives for first-year composition as defined by the Council of Writing Program Administrators (WPA), thereby increasing student retention.
