Marital satisfaction has been studied extensively by sociologists and psychologists, but its relationship to love has not been investigated. Sternberg has developed a Triangular Theory of Love, according to which, love consists of three components: intimacy, passion, and decision/commitment. These three components can be viewed as the vertices of a triangle. The size and shape of this triangle is based on the relative and absolute amounts of the three components. Sternberg hypothesized that the more similar two individuals' love triangles are, the more satisfied they will be with their relationship. The current study investigated this hypothesis. Fifty-one couples completed the Dyadic Adjustment Scale (DAS) and the Sternberg Triangular Love Scale. There was a positive correlation (r =.74) between love and marital satisfaction. While not significant, there was a tendency for triangle similarity between spouses to be positively related to marital satisfaction. Implications of these results for other theories and for future research were addressed.Subjects--Topical Terms:
