Thesis (M.S.)--Howard University, 2010.
A phenomenon that has been found to be more prevalent among men (Oliver & Hyde, 1993; Peterson & Hyde, 2010), casual sexual relationships have become a highly prevalent activity in today's society (Afifi & Faulkner, 2000; Hughes, Morrison, & Asada, 2005; Manning, Giordano, & Longmore, 2006).The current study categorized casual sexual relationships under two main subtypes: (1) as hookups (HUs): a one-time physically intimate event, including, but not limited to sexual intercourse and (2) as friends-with-benefits relationships (FWBRs): an ongoing sexual relationship between friends without the expectation of developing a committed relationship. The current study hypothesized that men who engage in either type of casual sexual relationship will be different from men who do not on the dimensions of attachment style, rejection sensitivity, religiosity, spirituality and gender role-attitudes. We also hypothesized that these characteristics will influence men's experience of casual sexual relationships. Participants were 95 single, heterosexual, African-American males from an HBCU. Using the Hookup Questionnaire, Rejection Sensitivity Questionnaire, the Experiences in Close Relationships - Revised Questionnaire, Spiritual Well-Being Scale and Sex-Role Egalitarianism scale, we found that, on average, men had an overall positive experience of hooking up and friends-with-benefits relationships. Additionally, cultural variables that affect casual sexual behavior among African-American men, clinical implications of the findings and recommendations for future research were discussed.
