Women are starting businesses at a faster rate than their male counterparts. Many of these women fill multiple roles: entrepreneur, wife, and mother. The purpose of this study is to identify and examine the factors that have the greatest impact on mothers and wives who own businesses. Assuming they all desire integration between their professional and personal lives, this study was designed to examine why some of these women are successful in that effort and why some simply are not.

This quantitative research focused exclusively on female entrepreneurs who are both wives and mothers. The study probed both the characteristics and motives of entrepreneurs and the role conflicts women face as they integrate work and family life. The Entrepreneurial Profile Questionnaire was the survey instrument used to collect data for this quantitative survey. The sample size was N=30.

This study analyzed the multiple issues and challenges that women entrepreneurs who are both wives and mothers face. A diverse set of variables including demographics, degree of commitment to their businesses and families, challenges in running their businesses, and future growth plans were included. The constructs of motivation, flexibility, achievement, sacrifice, support, and integration were tested and, in some cases, were determined to be significantly correlated. In particular, the concept of integration was tested and found to be significantly correlated. This provides new understanding into this construct, and now the door is open to further tests that may define what contributing variables strengthen the construct of integration.
