Thesis (M.S.T.)--Hofstra University, 2010.
The purpose of this thesis is to show the role of women through the development of the novela negra, as presented in the novels of Los mares del sur (1979) by Manuel Vazquez Montalban and Estudi in Lila (1989) by Maria-Antonia Oliver. The objective of both novels is to expose and criticize a corrupt society. Through their detectives both authors are able to denounce the corrupt society in which their characters live. In Los mares del sur, Manuel Vazquez Montalban expressed his disenchantment with the institutions of the Spanish culture. In the case of Maria-Antonia Oliver, denounces a corrupt society from a clearly feminist perspective as her novel challenges the values of a patriarchal society. At the same time, Maria-Antonia Oliver addresses contemporary issues affecting women such as abortion and rape. Maria-Antonia Oliver's feminist perspective challenges the parameters of the detective genre while Manuel Vazquez Montalban's realism destroys the illusion of an innocent society. Both authors successfully integrate their criticisms of society into the genre.
