Thesis (M.A.)--Sarah Lawrence College, 2010.

This thesis involves a discussion of Sarah Orne Jewett's short stories and novels as an important means of interpreting her complex and seemingly contradictory acceptance of the naturalness of women who embrace their roles within the home and women who seek alternative paths to traditional womanhood. The goal is to reveal how Jewett's fiction mediates between her acceptance of Victorian notions of proper womanhood and her desire to promote an exploration and acceptance of women whose natural state lies outside the traditional. This has been done by examining five of Jewett's short stories and one novel: "Miss Tempy's Watchers," "The Town Poor," "Martha's Lady," "The Stage Tavern," "Tom's Husband," and A Country Doctor. Upon close examination of these five short stories and one novel, it becomes apparent that Jewett is not condemning traditional womanhood (marriage and motherhood), but rather she is challenging traditional gender assumptions that seek to confine women within the limiting sphere of domesticity.
