Thesis (M.S.)--Tennessee Technological University, 2010.
Intrusion Detection Systems (IDS) are an important component of modern security infrastructure in the 21st century where computing resources tend to have an increasing distributed nature and cross organizational and geographical boundaries. For several years, the use of IDSs in enterprise networks as means to detect possible attacks or suspicious network traffic has proven to be of paramount importance. Despite the benefits associated with the use of IDS, there is still potential vulnerability associated with the inherent nature of conventional rule-based IDSs allowing attacks to fall through cracks and remain under radar. To address the problem, this research presents a novel approach of integrating Field Programmable Gate Array (FPGA) and Fuzzy Logic for intrusion detection. The proposed FPGA based Fuzzy IDS (FPGA-FIDS) has the capability of inexact reasoning, accounting for variations in attack patterns with its embedded Fuzzy Inference Engine, and the potential to provide high throughput, parallelism, and low non-recurring engineering costs.
