This study explored the relationship between a behavioral change communication project, the Addis Ababa University Modeling and Reinforcement to Combat HIV/AIDS (MARCH) program, and gender, sexual communication, and condom negotiation. The Addis Ababa MARCH program incorporates two major components---modeling in the form of a print serial drama, and reinforcement through HIV/AIDS awareness events hosted by certified peer educators, or reinforcement agents (RAs). The two components of the MARCH program communicate behavioral change at the intrapersonal, interpersonal, and community level. This paper focuses primarily on the reinforcement component. The MARCH project is particularly unique in that it incorporates both male and female students in the discussion of sexual health.

Particularly with HIV prevention, gender plays a crucial role in the effective diffusion of health related messages and behavioral change, and presents a necessary area of research. A survey was developed using established measures to explore the potential differences in HIV-related knowledge, attitudes towards sexual communication and condom negotiation, and sexual practices amongst male and female students with different levels of exposure to the Addis Ababa University MARCH program events. The results of the study did not support the hypotheses of this research; however, unique findings were revealed.
