Thesis (M.A.)--Prescott College, 2011.
This thesis focuses on the intersections between the fields of environmental education, critical pedagogy, and democratic education. Theorists and writers from each of these fields have criticized the United States public education system and offered recommendations for major reforms. The author explains that the major arguments made by environmental educators, critical pedagogues, and democratic educators overlap and compliment one another. Writers in all three fields maintain that the U.S. education system is dehumanizing to students and that the essential solution to this problem is to implement a curriculum that is based on students' lives and the communities in which they live. The author illustrates how such reform is possible through developing a curriculum framework for upper-elementary grades that is community-based, student-centered, and integrated across academic subjects.
